Are you a commercially-minded Commissioning Editor or Publisher with experience building and overseeing a list of illustrated non-fiction? Are you looking for an opportunity to relocate to Australia? 

An independent, non-fiction, lifestyle publishing house is seeking to expand their team and connect with talented professionals based near or able to relocate to their head office in Sydney Australia. 

In this exciting, newly-created role, you will oversee the entire publishing list and hold responsibilities including: managing relationships with the international author / illustrator list, commissioning new titles and artwork, and managing budgets for upcoming projects. Reporting to the managing director, this is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a role in which to grow and develop their publishing career. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Editorial duties: creation of the yearly publishing program, driving the acquisition process and end-to-end planning of titles (including: formats, costings, schedules, and design briefs).
  • Managing relationships: Managing new and existing author / distributor relationships to ensure the success of the publishing program. 
  • Line management: once established in the role, you will oversee two direct reports within the publishing team. 
  • Sales and Reporting: close collaboration with the global distribution sales team in planning the yearly publishing list, working through the selling process, budgeting, forecasts, and costs. Confidence with managing contracts and reporting on sales outcomes. 

The successful candidate will have a global and commercial approach to commissioning non-fiction, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. They will be adaptable, a team player and a people person.

Work pattern & location: Office based in Sydney, Australia (with the potential to move hybrid once established in the role). Some international and interstate travel will be required.
